Fixed, Variable or Semi-variable
How does this cost behave when output goes up? Three answers, and the third one is where every break even calculation goes wrong.
What it is
One prompt at a time, and the room decides: Fixed, Variable or Semi-variable.
- 18 prompts, each with a short explanation that appears after the answer.
- Answers are scored on speed as well as correctness, so the fastest and the most accurate are usually different people.
- It runs on phones, or on the board alone with nobody joining and the room answering out loud.
- The board shows how many have answered and never what anyone answered, until you reveal.
Why it works
Because a room that has to commit to an answer finds out what it actually thinks.
- A wrong answer costs nothing, so people commit rather than waiting to be told.
- The split on the board after the reveal is the discussion. You can see which way the room leaned.
- The explanation is read out when everyone is still holding their own answer, which is when it lands.
- The report afterwards names the prompts the class got wrong, which is what you reteach.
How a session goes.
- Join2 min
A code goes on the board and everyone joins with a nickname. Skip this entirely in board mode.
- Prompt20 sec
One prompt, large, with the answers underneath and a countdown running.
- Reveal40 sec
The split appears, the answer is marked, and the explanation goes up.
- Repeat14 min
Through as many of the 18 prompts as the time allows. You choose how many in setup.
- Result3 min
Standings, four awards, and a saved report listing what the room found hardest.
The board shows one thing. Their phone shows another.
- The prompt and the answer options, large enough for the back row
- A countdown ring and one dot per person as their answer lands
- The split across the options once you reveal, with the answer marked
- The explanation, to read out
- The prompt, and one button per answer: Fixed, Variable or Semi-variable
- Their own choice, locked in, with the others dimmed
- Whether they were right, and what they scored
- The explanation, in their own hand, after the reveal
What we would tell you over tea.
- Let the room argue before you reveal. The answer is less interesting than the disagreement.
- Read the explanation out rather than leaving it on screen. It is written to be said.
- With phones banned or the wifi down, turn on board mode in setup. The activity runs identically and nobody joins.
- The report names what the class got wrong. Open it before you plan the next class.
Ready when you are.
Making an account takes a minute, and the whole library opens with it.
